Feedback is a gift, so find the time

Here’s a thought that came to me the other day when I was getting my laptop, mobile and ipod wires mixed up the other day:

    • Generation X people like me (born between the early 1960’s and the late 1970’s) are the generation who arguably have the biggest challenge in dealing with the technological revolution that continues to take place.
    • Baby boomers (post 2nd World War babies), seem to be able to take it or leave it.
    • Generation Y (late 1970’s to early 1990’s) were growing up and learning as the most significant technological breakthroughs happened (mobiles being a necessary accessory, computers being indispensible and music on the go).
    • Generation Z (mid 1990’s to late 2000’s) know nothing else.

I know many fellow Generation X people will tell me they are a smart as anyone with the technology, so maybe it’s just me. But it did get me thinking about other impacts of technology.

It has certainly impacted people’s time management.

Our ability to focus on the important things on the To Do list is far harder with the email and mobile phone pinging in messages constantly, and the availability of the unlimited information and news on the web. It also inevitably means that we have less time when we are not staring at a screen or with a phone to our ear.

More time spent with technology inevitably means less time spent with our people. Proven management techniques for improving performance, such as giving feedback, fall a little bit by the wayside and we need to challenge ourselves to what extent we are doing what we should be.

9 out of 10 leaders on our leadership development programs recognise and accept that they are not giving enough feedback to their colleagues and team, and that it is critical performance management tool. The benefits are massive:

    • It builds trust
    • It increases motivation and self esteem
    • It reinforces positive behaviours and a high performance work environment
    • It strengthen relationships
    • It increases accountability
    • It makes employees aware that you know what they are doing

It also costs nothing, doesn’t take much time and doing it right is easy by making it:

    • Immediate – don’t wait to give it
    • Specific – make sure they know exactly what they did which you appreciate .
    • Impactful – Explain how the event or behaviour affected you, the team or the organization.
    • Encouraging  – stick to the positive
    • Focused. State how the performance or action was positive and contributed to success.

It’s a bit like driving a car, most of us can do it, but sometimes our good habits slip. It’s a gift – let’s give it.
